Project management in Urban Design is a regime of practices in the engagement with and in projects. But how does one start with managing projects in Urban Design? This aspect of project management is closely related to what we might call the project manager’s motive: As a project manager you get involved in an urban situation. The articulation of this involvement in the project world allows for the structural orientation of your project work along the usually challenging way. It provisionally centres what is at stake in the relation of process and product – for you and other actors. This interacts at all times with the assemblage of the urban situation around a matter of concern, which moves the fragile and brittle aspects of a situation into focus. It is these aspects that allow questioning motives and holding actors accountable for what they actually do.
It is advisable that we de-psychologize the aspect of motive: We do not see it as causal telos, but as a structural hub, a structural anchor and driver of a process. It is therefore an affective structure that brings in a vector of movement, but remains subject to change.
